How do you know if Martial Arts is for you unless you try? It can be daunting at first but the rewards are endless and the journey fun and challenging. Mixed Martial Arts or MMA consists of a range of full contact, combat sports that allow fighters to use different fighting styles to compete against each other in a ring or cage. Disciplines include Boxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Muay Thai, and Kickboxing amongst others. We ensure that you only fight against people who are on the same fitness and skill level as you to guarantee a safe, fair environment.
The best way to find out if MMA is for you, is to try it out at least once. It’s also useful to know how it originated, which will help you better understand the practice.
Mixed Martial Arts can be traced back to the ancient Olympics, in particular the sport of Pankration, which was essentially a blend of boxing and wrestling (minus the rules). Pankration literally means ‘all powers’ and was often used by the Spartans on the battlefields. In the 1920’s, Vale Tudo, a mix of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Shoot Wrestling, emerged in Brazil. It was the sport that paved the way for Mixed Martial Arts as we know it today, although the rules have changed significantly since then.
Today, MMA is primarily focused on health and fitness, with the safety of participants a top priority. Fighters must wear gloves to protect their hands, and fight in their own weight classes to ensure correct MMA practices.
Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. If you’d like to find out more, contact the team at Evolution MMA & Fitness.
